Tree Cabling and Bracing

Tree Cabling And Bracing In Sarnia, Ontario

Sarnia Tree Service fits cabling and bracing hardware to trees with a structural weak point that are otherwise sound enough to keep. The crew is fully insured, and we would rather say hardware will not help than fit a cable that accomplishes nothing.

Tree Cabling and Bracing details

Two Ways To Support A Weak Tree

A cable runs high in the tree as a flexible steel line, keeping two stems from moving too far apart when the wind picks up. A brace works differently: a threaded steel rod driven through an existing split, holding both halves together mechanically.

Neither one fixes the underlying weakness. What both do is buy a tree more years than it would otherwise have before removal becomes the only option.

Multi-Stemmed Trees Are The Usual Candidate

The tree that comes up most often for cabling here is a multi-stemmed silver maple or willow, both common wherever this clay ground stays wet. Plenty of them split into two or three trunks close to the ground.

Where bark gets pinched inside that split, the stems were never really fused to begin with. That joint sheds a little more strength each year the stems continue to grow and add weight, and either a strong lake wind or a heavy coat of ice can be enough to bring it apart.

Placement Determines How Well A Cable Works

A cable is set high in the tree, positioned roughly a third of the way in from the branch ends back toward the fork. At that height it controls movement well without ever putting the full load on one fixed point.

The system is built to allow some sway, not eliminate it entirely. A trunk held perfectly rigid never develops the strength it would otherwise build on its own, so the goal is limiting the extremes rather than freezing the tree in place.

Reducing The Crown Usually Helps Too

Pairing cabling with a canopy reduction is the more common recommendation, since trimming weight off the crown cuts down what the hardware has to resist in the first place. Crown thinning and canopy reduction done alongside a cable install tends to outlast hardware installed on its own.

Skip the reduction and the steel ends up carrying weight that a saw could have removed for a fraction of the cost. Most quotes we write price both separately, so the choice stays yours.
